Understanding Different Types of Engine Oil: Synthetic, Semi-Synthetic, and Mineral

DIFFERENT TYPES OF ENGINE OIL

When it comes to engine oil, there are three main types to consider: synthetic oil, semi-synthetic oil (synthetic blend), and conventional oil. Each type has distinct characteristics and benefits that impact engine performance and protection. Understanding the differences between these oils can help you make an informed choice for your vehicle's needs.

We’ll tell you everything you need to know about the different types of engine oils.

Mineral oil, also known as conventional oil, is derived directly from crude oil through a refining process.
Synthetic oil is artificially created through complex chemical processes.
Semi-synthetic oil, also referred to as synthetic blend oil, is a combination of mineral and synthetic oil.

MINERAL OIL

Mineral oil, also known as conventional oil, is derived directly from crude oil through a refining process. It is the traditional and widely used motor oil. Mineral oil provides decent engine protection under normal driving conditions and moderate temperatures. However, it has limited resistance to oxidation and breakdown compared to synthetic oils.

SYNTHETIC OIL

Synthetic oil is artificially created through complex chemical processes. It involves molecular engineering of base oils to achieve a more uniform and consistent molecular structure. Synthetic oil offers numerous advantages over conventional oil, including superior lubrication at both high and low temperatures, increased resistance to oxidation and breakdown, reduced engine wear, improved fuel economy, and extended oil change intervals. It is often recommended for high-performance engines, extreme temperatures, and severe driving conditions.

SEMI-SYNTHETIC OIL (SYNTHETIC BLEND)

Semi-synthetic oil, also referred to as synthetic blend oil, is a combination of mineral and synthetic oil. It is formulated by blending a portion of synthetic base oil with conventional base oil. Semi-synthetic oil aims to offer some of the benefits of synthetic oil while maintaining a more affordable price compared to full synthetic oil. It provides better protection and performance than conventional oil, especially in demanding driving conditions, but it doesn't match the robustness of full synthetic oil.

CHOOSING THE BEST OIL FOR YOUR ENGINE

Selecting the appropriate oil for your engine depends on several factors, such as the vehicle manufacturer's recommendations, driving conditions, climate, and personal preferences. It is crucial to consult your vehicle's owner's manual or seek professional advice to determine the most suitable oil for your specific engine. Consider the unique demands placed on your engine and the performance benefits offered by each oil type.
